Exhibition Signage & Wayfinding

Exhibition signs and wayfinding for Unintended Consequences: Gathering Downstream, an exhibition by Jen Southern at Quarry Bank Mill (produced by FutureEverything.

Direction took cues from the outcomes of Jen’s exploration into machine learning and weaved fabric. The machine was fed a series of images of fabric samples at quarry bank mill and then tasked to generate new images of fabric, which at a glance passed for a true image, but on closer exploration defying logic and becoming very uncanny.

The type treatment for the titles reflecting this, a weave that drifts in and out of alignment. This was also prompted by a conversation where we were both fascinated by the idea of living type from Jeff Vandermeer’s book Annihilation. Section titles map to the surrounding area of Quarry Bank Mill, with letter composition inspired by the movement of these surrounds.
