9 frames looped Paul Verhoven’s sci-fi blockbuster is a thinly veiled satire of American jingoism, performed as a coming of age movie. A highly militarised, violently right wing and colonialist society engages in war with an enemy they have no desire to empathise with or make attempts to coexist with. Released in 1997, many themes of this movie are prescient today.
